Prayer of Saint Ignatius

An Active and a Passive Stand

Latin Text

English Text

Exegesis

Suscipe Domine

Take O Lord

Please have an active hand here, Lord.

Et accipe

And accept

Yes, but one step further, Lord, take a passive stance to what You find.

Universam meam libertatem

All that I am

Accept my assets, my personality, my memory, my understanding, my imagination, my will

Quidquid habeo vel possideo

All that I possess

Accept my handicaps, my failures and my sins, my knowledge, my skills, my money and my things

Mihi largitus es

You have given to me

By Your Love and Your freedom and the free will You have given to me

Id tibi totum restituo

I surrender it all to you

I also take an active and a passive stand to You

Ac tuae prorsus voluntati trado gubernandum

To be disposed of according to Your will

You, who are running the whole show. You, who know best.

Ad hoc punctum, nunc, ex tempore, in creationem tuam aeternam.

Right now, this moment in your Eternal creation.

Then You are G-od by fiat, for us to see; and we are yours.

Addendum

Amorem tui solum cum gratia tua mihi dones

Give me only Your love and Your grace

You, Your love, Your Christ, Your grace is the only thing that lasts when all else is gone

Et dives sum satis

With these I will be rich enough

I choose to be poor for your reality. I am happy.

Nec aliud quidquam ultra posco

And will desire nothing more

I choose to be nothing before You. I am satisfied.
